The Feral Island Girl

Marian quickly ducked behind a dumpster after hurrying down a block. There she crouched down, doing her best to keep quiet as she caught her breath. About three minutes later, a few people walked past the dumpster, not even turning to look where she was hiding. With a sigh of relief, Marian relaxed.

It was a long, dragged out and uncomfortable trip. The sun was shining nonstop, and many times Shairka would stray for some reason or another. Being stuck in a make-shift raft for days on end would test anyone’s nerves, Marian thought. Part of her wishes she stayed on the island. That would not save her the ear ache that was the people she was trying to save.
On the tenth day, though, they had reached the mainland. As to what mainland, she didn’t know at first. It was just land, and that was good enough. In fact, she found herself in the Aegean Sea and on the shores of the Mugla province, and their appearance on its shores sparked hysteria when a whale-sized shark was reported swimming along its shores.
First thing first, Marian brought the survivors to the nearest port they could find and let them off. They were incredibly grateful, and thanks to them, prevented instant aerial bombardment. They told their story how their shit was attacked by a mysterious creature and sunk, and how a few days later a young girl on an island saved them with a giant pet shark.

Marian found her-self flooded with more attention than she liked. Being alone on that island for so long made her self-conscious when surrounded by people all wanting to know details as to what happened. Before that, though, she had to show off Shairka, who she had to assure to the country of Turkey that she was no danger. It was here that Marian was glad for training Shairka to do pointless tricks. With all the spare time, it was something to do. Shairka responded like a Sea World Orca, flipping into the air, rolling over and even raising her fin for a high-five.
The world was utterly astounded. This was the first example of a human and a Kaiju working so closely together. Many critics simply pointed out that Shairka was just a trained puppy, nothing more, and that this was a massive, dangerous animal that was a liability. A lot of people were still unsure, even, but it was agreed by the Democrats of Turkey that Shairka was to be left unharmed, and Marian to be awarded a medal for saving lives.
A majority of Europe itself was flat out untrusting, however. From Greece to London, much of the continent was very hesitant to allow such freedom to a random girl appear with a Kaiju at her command after the Legions of the Pantheon have arisen. Due to this, Marian had the displeasure of being in an interrogation room for about a week before being released.
She didn’t mind too much, since they brought her more food than she seen since her stranding. Being back in society as a whole was a luxury. She was happy to have an actual shower with clean hot water, to fix her hair so it wasn’t a mess, to eat as much as she liked and get new clothes which were in sorely need of replacement.
Europe was very vocal about the leniency to letting her free so soon, but Turkey defended the girl and her shark, saying she was of no danger to the people. Europe in response reminded Turkey that like much of Eurasia, they too were at the danger of the LOP and they should exercise extreme caution.

Marian didn’t even know of the heavier ramifications of this. She was too young to care for politics and too busy to care even if she even really knew of what was really going on. All she knew was that she became a celebrity. She went to many interviews, all which sponsored her as the “Feral Island Girl”. With nowhere to go, Marian happily took up their offers just to get complimentary food and money. She appeared on a few talk shows and did a few interviews for newspapers, but it soon got to the point Marian was starting to slip away from crowds to get some peace.

Slowly she got to her feet and walked out into the open. Today she was escaping more news reporters, wanting to get her to talk more about Shairka and how she got to tame her. At least now she remembered to visit Shairka. Since she had been back, she didn’t have much time for her, but she kept tabs every day.
Her current residence was in the Cannakkale province in Turkey, near the sea-side by a mile for easy access to the sea. Without second thought, she began her long walk to the docks where she usually went to go visit Shairka. A hope, skip and a bus ride, and that left her less than a hundred feet from the beach.
But looking out the bus window, Marian dreaded seeing people she recognized reporters just lying in ambush. She groaned. When the bus came to a stop, she exited and quickly hid herself in the shadow of a building. Carefully she peered out from the corner. Well, there’s no way I am going out there and getting caught, Marian decided.
Turning away, Marian began walking down the shore in the opposite direction. Once at a decent distance, she climbed down to the edge of the water. Much to her disappointment, she noticed that the dock she needed to get too had no real way to enter it from shallows.
Marian cursed while climbing back up, and stood there at the top while thinking of another way to get to the dock. Nothing came to mind; not unless she wanted to just wade through all of the publicity. Deciding against it, Marian walked away.

Getting back to her room was just as much a hassle. Walking through town was just as troubling. Her face was familiar enough that people stopped her along the way to try and talk to her despite the language barriers. By the time she actually got to the hotel, she had gotten the attention of the local news groups again and she had to make a run for it. The best part about living on an island for over half a year was that she was much fitter than they were, plus their cameras and all crowding after her made them easily to lose.
Once back in the fourth floor, she had flopped down on the bed with a sigh. All day she ran around, and tired from doing so. It felt good to have a bed again. Each time she laid in a bed now, Marian appreciated it.
Lazily she reached out and grabbed the clicker and turned on the television. The news came in the middle of a story.

“…and so the government of Norway is unsure how deal with the matter of Vastrato’s whereabouts. The giant crocodile was last seen roaming just south of the Faroe Islands before disappearing into the depths once more. Ever since the last landfall in Ireland, Vastrato has been kept on a near constant watch.”
“In other news, a group of campers have vanished in the Ukraine over a year ago is still undergoing forensics. The group of five young adults, three men and two women, never returned from their trip on that Monday night when due. Ever since, mysterious disappearances have been reported all across the western and northern parts of Europe and all the way up into Russia. Forensics has found little to go on. The first group to mysteriously vanish is presumed dead at this point.”
“In other news, mysterious events plague the Eastern Mediterranean! Reports of strange sea creatures range from the Egypt to the Black Sea, where the sightings are most frequent.”

Marian sat up to look at the TV.

“Two weeks ago a small fishing boat was attacked by an unseen creature. There were no casualties. The men on the boat were lucky. A pleasure boat was seen grabbed by what can only be described as a tentacle and dragged below. The crushed boat was recovered, but there was no trace of those that were aboard. This was but one of many reported incidents. It’s believed these sightings and attacks are the result of more Kaiju appearing. Kaiju have been on the rise since the global earthquake of last year. Scientists and political officials alike agree that this is only the start of Kaiju emergence.”

Marian stared, but wasn’t listening after that. She lost her parents to an unknown sea monster. This wasn’t new to her, but it still stung each time she thought about it. How ironic, she thought; she was off the island, but she couldn’t even really go home. She wasn’t a legal adult there. Actually, she wasn’t a legal adult here, she realized! Marian was just now realizing that, while she was getting complimentary care for now in exchange for interviews and the like, that was going to probably end sooner than she could guess. What was she going to do, then?
What a dumb question, she immediately thought after a few seconds. “I took care of myself before,” she said, and she could do it again. She stood up, staring at the TV. Why stop there? If she could save herself… just maybe she could save others. Yes, not only would she do it like before, but she would also go a step further. Other monsters were coming. This was not going to stop. People were going to die.
“Not if I can help it…”
No fool, Marian knew she couldn’t do it alone. Shairka was going to be a big help, but she would need more than to just that. She would need more. Back and forth she paced, thinking. After a minute she figured that if she announced it on television, others would support her! If she could get supporters, there wasn’t a shadow of a doubt that she could save people’s lives.
On her way down the elevator, it was easy as can be once she was down on the first floor. Marian walked right out the front door, turned her head and there was a male reporter right there. Before the man could say anything, Marian held her finger up and told him to hush. “Now… who do I have to go to talk to the world as a whole?”
“The whole world? Um… well, that takes a lot of time to set up, and you have to contact lots of people…”
“Can you do that?” She stared at him demandingly.
“Well, I can’t… Maybe? I’d have to ask my boss.”
“Do that right now, please? I have something I want to say to the world as soon as I can.”
The man stared at her. “What do you have to say?”
“You’ll see if you can get me on television.”
“I… will see what I can do,” he finally conceded.

Important Dates
-Feb 25 2034: Marian sits in her hotel room while watching the news, hearing of various events about Vastrato’s last appearance, a mysterious case of missing campers in the Ukraine, and sea monster sightings. These news reports make Marian realize she needs to step up and try to make a difference. She approaches a reporter and looks to announce to the world she will step up to protect mankind from Kaiju.
I didn't expect this to be done so soon. I actually wanted to extend further into what Marian's actions ultimately spark, but... I decided I think I will leave that for another entry. This will lead up to kaiju profiles, ones relating to the current Sea Monster Art Jam going on at this moment. Which is odd cause I already posted the first creature I made up for that jam, which takes place at a later date then the events of this entry.
I'm getting a grasp of my events. Slowly but surely I will post more up until the latest point in the timeline, as we're only suppose within a certain point of the timeline so far. I think I know how I will top off my final event... Hopefully, anyway.

Simple but an effective way of developing Marian into a defender of mankind.
