Description

Stats

Name: Kelpasaurus gigas
Alias(s): Kelpie, Kelly, Kal
Height: 80 Meters at the shoulder
Length: 359 feet
Weight: 110,000 tons
Means of Locomotion: Swimming
Rank: 1

Abilities
-Symbiotic Kelp: From a distance it seems almost like hair or feathers, but symbolizing the ultimate plant-like animal, Kelpasaurus’s overall body surface is covered in some sort of plant or another. Most of her backside from her head to her tail is covered in a massive shaggy forest of sea weed. Kelp, to be exact. Kelp that is anchored down into her very tissue and bound to her DNA’s very nature. The Kelp feeds off her body in almost a parasitic manner. However, its actually pulling the waste from her body as nutrition. In return, she gets a never ending supply of sugars and other vitamins. Never does Kelpie have to feed like a normal animal as she gets everything from the sun itself.

-Cyanobacteria Plume: Many plants and algae grows upon Kelpasaurus’s body. Kelp, Zooxanthella, and many others. Another symbiotic organism that attaches to Kelpasaurus’s skin is massive patches of blue/green Cyanobacteria. Like the kelp it has equal exchange for binding to this host. The bacteria grows and as it does, it ends up releasing its toxin into her body. Normal creatures would die from Cyanotoxin, but Kelpie can actually store this toxin…

-Gas Pods: Within the gas pods on the kelp. While it allows her to swim easier, these pods can also become a dangerous weapon. They can pop in self defense and release enough deadly toxin into the water(or air) to kill dozens of animals in the immediate area. Sure enough it is plenty to make other kaiju think before they aimlessly attack such a toxic beast. Exposure can cause gastric poisoning, rashes, fever, and other various side affects.

Weaknesses
-Shallow Only: Due to the immense light needed to creature enough sugars, Kelpasaurus can not venture very far from shallow, rich water where conditions are not favorable for kelp growth. Cooler waters with less sunlight can be harmful in the long run and malnourish her.

-Skittish: Kelly really isn’t not one to be aggressive in the least bit. Besides defending herself with pods of cyanotoxin, fighting is not something she will do even if no other choice. At most, she would actually smash a boat or a enemy on accidentally as she flees.

Personality: The ancient dinosaur known as Kelpasaurus(Most call her Kelpie or Kelly) is by far one of the very most peaceful creatures to exist for its size and capabilities as a Rank-1 kaiju. Up until this point, all kaiju of such mass were immensely destructive with enough power to wipe out cities. Kelpie is not one of them.
Shy and reclusive by nature, she appeared off the coast of Florida only after the great Nibiru Disaster. Ever since she has made no attempt to conceal herself. It is thought she simply does not acknowledges human beings as a threat to her. On the other hand, she seems to be quite anxious around large tankers and big monsters. Whatever such a massive creature could have attained such fear from is a mystery. Due to this disposition, she poses little to no threat to anyone or anything and thus is on the least concern side of the spectrum when it comes to threats.

History:
August 18, 2021
As the sun dawned off the coast of the southern tip of Florida, a string of events had come into play. A heavy set crane carried by barge was being towed to the eastern side of the state for the reconstruction of damages after the recent meteor crisis. Heavy-duty equipment was being requested left and right at every turn. With much of the coast being flooded and all land vehicles being held back by massive debris, sea power was about the only sensible travel method for the moment in the coastal areas around the states.
None suspected more disaster anytime soon. Let alone what was to happen in the next several days…
In the tinged sea water, a ominous shadow loomed. Sensing the churning engine was too much for it to ignore. The vibrations were a threat that would not be tolerated.
What seemed to be a swell lurched at the boat and its barge without mercy. The sound of metal being abused groaned through the water. Again it came. This time the boat barge that the boat capsized and slowly but surely taking the boat with it. The crane crashed over into the sea and was immediately ceased by a set of long jaws. Metal twisted and bent under pressure. What’s worse was that the creature began to run with its prize in jaw and dragging vessel into deeper water.
The SOS went out but it would be too late for those aboard. Everything went under with little to no sign was left besides swirling water and bubbles…

August 20, 2021
Days later the barge and boat both appeared again in ruins. If not for the floating barge it would have stayed on the seafloor. The boat itself was torn up something fierce. Statewide panic surged and everyone was already crying wolf about a monster in Florida‘s waters..
Aboard the Ammonite, Marian was reading over the reports. This wasn’t the first attack, either. A wake of destruction had went up the coast the last week in a variable pathway up the western coast. Pods of cetaceans were also beaching themselves on the coasts in fear of something, and other telltale signs had also surfaced.
Seems vacation was officially over. With a sigh to herself, she strolled up to the control room.

At his desk, the captain of the Ammonite leaned over a map of the area. His work was never done, like the chasers themselves. If it wasn’t deciding where to go, it was getting involved. Oh how many times he himself must have thrown himself into a monsters jaws…
When Marian walked in, he sat up. “Aye, what do you need, lass?”
She sat down he report. “Getting your two cents on the matter. You been on the water for all your life. Do you got any idea what were after?”
The surely man leaned back into his chair ad scratched his head slowly. “It could be many a demon, young Mary. Sea Monsters of all sorts exists. I seen most, if not all. The ocean is a vast place where mysteries can still exist. Mysteries that even I may not know of. It could be a monster from so deep in the ocean that it literally comes from hell.”
The way he worded things… Did he ever give a straight answer? Feeling like she got no where, she sighed and shook her head. “So I guess that means you got no idea?”
“Aye…”
She huffed. “Alright, never mind then…” Walking back downstairs, she couldn’t help but wonder herself what was out there. Let alone running into it… Last time the ship had confronted a monster head on, it was left to get repaired for two years. Course, now the ship had been upgraded and given advanced technology since then. But never once had it been tested in an action with a powerful monster.
Then again, it didn’t have too. Coming on deck again she saw the fin of her own monster Shairka swimming alongside the Ammonite. Seeing her monster made her happier… Shairka had grown into quite a formidable creature that was a force to be reckon with. If that wasn’t enough, she knew Vastrato was somewhere nearby. However, unlike Shairka, Vastrato was not a tame kaiju.
Still, why did she follow? Looking back Marian was reminded how intelligent monsters could be. Perhaps the crocodile felt a bond with them… Or Shairka. Surely she knew right from wrong, or at least acknowledged what seemed best. Kaiju in general… So many mysteries around them then just being monsters. In her mind, her job would never be done.

It was near noon with the sun high in the sky. Hard to believe that only weeks ago so much destruction came from it… But now the sun shined brightly as if nothing happened.
Down in the back dock where the ship held its smaller vessels, Marian was working on a small remote control sub. Passing time and all that nonsense. Who thought finding a dangerous monster in the waters would have been so… slow…
Then the siren went off, nearly making her jump out of her wetsuit. Being as neat, yet fast as possible, she put her little project aside before making haste up the stairs and hallways. Coming on deck, she nearly ran over Vagrant who happened to be running by. “Whoa, heads up!”
“Sorry, Vagrant!,” barely able to get the words out as she kept on running.
Heading up to the control room, she came in in a flurry. “What’s going on?”
Heiberg was looking at the sonar. “Something big just underneath us.”
“How big?”
“Big,” the elderly captain replied. “And coming up.”
Marian was quick to run out and again almost knocked Vagrant over. “Geez woman! Second time today!” Thought partly amused.
“Get down here, something’s coming up!”
On deck and looking over the rail, she watched the water… She could see nothing. “Big?” Just ocean…
When Vagrant came down with his rifle he looked over with the gun aimed. “Well where is it?”
“I don’t know. Heiberg said it was big but I don’t see anything.”
“Maybe its so big that we can’t see it…”
The idea of that made Marian skip a heartbeat. Something that big would indeed be something to consider. A monster that size would be something along a Rank-1, which all Rank-1’s so far were huge threats. Maybe it was Misoko… God forbid that mass of wrathful tentacles being here in these waters.
Just then into view, the water began to shade into a black shadow. Was that it? The monster? Staring closely and she saw long leaves flowing in the water. “Kelp?”
“So were just picking up seaweed?”
“No, that don’t make sense. Why would it be coming up so fast? Something isn’t right…”

Indeed something was off. The seaweed under the Ammonite was moving forward, faster then the ship. It was soon to pass the boat entirely. Even as it moved far ahead, its sheer mass made it very clearly visible. A moving mass of kelp, green as the grass is on the shore. Impressive, but not as impressive as the real creature.
Breaching the surface came a long serpentine figure that slowly reached toward the sky. A mope of long seaweed hung from the back of its head and dripped with seawater. The back soon surfaced after.

Marian and Vagrant stared in astonishment. That thing was HUGE. Possibly one of the largest creatures to ever exist. But what Marian found startling was that it wasn’t just some sea monster… It was a dinosaur! A massive sauropod covered in seaweed and algae.

It didn’t stay surfaced for now. Only about twenty seconds after it had come up, it was diving back down again. For such a big creature it was fast, because it was under the water and moving ahead.

“I think its safe to say that this thing isn’t the attacker that has taken boats,” Marian stated.
“How can you be sure?,” asked Vagrant.
“Look at it, its just a big placid sauropod. Besides, see any big sharp teeth on it? But its still a big discovery,” reminding him. “Another dinosaur… here in the ocean, just outside of where we been staying. In a sense, anyway.”
“How do you know its not one of them long-necked sea dinosaurs?,” Vagrant challenged her.
Marian shot a glare at him that would scare a dragon into submission. “Vagrant, I am appalled. A swimming a dinosaur? Ha! Now I heard it all. Yes, there is one right there in front of us, but back then no true dinosaurs lived a marine life. Not back then. This creature is new and recent. Besides, look at the anatomy. Similar to Supersaurus and Brachiosaurus, no? Then that huge cranium… Surely… Oh, I’m sorry.”
Vagrant looked bored with her little lecture, yawning and just nodding along. “No, no. I was listening. Marine dinosaur, alive now, fathead, and uh… Something about my SAT?”
The young kaijuologist sighed to herself. Well, not everyone gave a damn about paleontology. Then again, she herself never was one for paleontology. At least not devoted to it as much as Marine Biology. Knowing only the basics of such a topic was about it and not much else. “Either way,” she went on. “I think our target surely is not this one. We must keep searching,” she concluded.

Even as they walked away, the ship suddenly veered off hard. Vagrant cursed something and was quick to start running up to the control room. Marian clumsily followed behind. Entering the cabin, she could only hear Vagrant finishing up with asking what the problem was, before Heiberg replied, “The beast did something to the propellers!”
“Keep vines,” Marian suggested. “It makes sense.” Looking at the front window, she noticed the water churn with bubbles in the wake of the dinosaur that swam ahead. At first it seemed to be nothing, but that changed quick when she saw the seabirds nearby begin falling out of the sky. “Aw crap, move the boat. MOVE IT, NOW. Its released some sort of poison gas!”
Heiberg moved as fast as he could tot urn the wheel, but it didn’t do much good. The propellers were still tangled. Quick thinking, Vagrant slammed the cabin door shut to make sure the invisible terror didn’t get in. After some forceful pulling and pushing, the propellers kicked to life and allowed the ship to move away fast.
Getting away was successful, but some of the crew was already kneeling over themselves from the toxin. “We must get into port. I won’t have my men dying,” Heiberg grouched. “You and your bloody monsters, lass!”
Feeling bad had to wait. Heiberg was right, medical attention was needed. For now, they must dock…

As promised, Dawn of Monsters is getting back up. About time to start posting this stuff. Building up here!

I think most know the story now. Kelpasaurus was one of those ideas that... too my surprise still... is done to death. Plant-o-saurus. Apparently ever since Pokemon, that's been a huge thing. Still sort of shocks me, though. I only know ONE and that's by KaijuLord.
And thus everything snowballed until Kelpasaurus.

Ya know, I thought this one would probably be one of my biggest. But as I refined the monster, I found it hard to make it very affective to the story. Its not aggressive... best I could do was give it the ability to spew Cyanotoxin in such great amounts that it might kill acres of ocean at once. But even then its a defensive thing...

But I already made plans to make her. Rather not throw out a fairly original concept of something already done a lot. So there she is... filler and starting off the plot and a big flagship for Arc 4.

Oh and kudos to Rendragonclaw for throwing this idea out about... a year ago was it? Ya, without him, Kelpi would not exist.

Do enjoy and stay tuned.

Sure as heck is a pretty awesome concept. Love the design of the monster too!
